Bringing fair trade to a fair trade village

When we brought our first World Textile Day West to Saltford in 2014, we had no idea what a great venue we’d found. Our hosts the Saltford Community Association couldn’t be more enthusiastic. And as a bonus, Saltford prides itself in being a ‘fair trade village’ – a perfect fit for our fair trade ethos. Here are some pics from World Textile Day West in Saltford.

Talks -

Morning – John Fisher 'The Tent Makers of Cairo'

A group of textile artists who use the centuries old technique of needle-turnedapplique to produce exquisite decorative panels. Tents were used for specialoccasions, not for living in, whilst the panels were designed for the decoration ofoutside spaces where they might create the illusion of outdoor rooms. A revival of thecraft occurred in the mid 19th century when decorative panels were created for moregeneral use, not just the elites. The tentmakers contemporary work can be considered an art form intended for interior decoration.

Afternoon – Diane Gaffney 'Textile Hunting in South West China'
A few years back (pre-pandemic luckily) we finally got to Southwest China. I had
long wanted to see for myself how many amazing textiles Id seen and read about werestill being made by minority groups. From the mountainous land border in the farwest down to the tropical southern border, we pursued hints and rumors of groups of women still indigo dyeing, making traditional pleated skirts, embroidering, hemp and batik making which led to out-of-the-way villages, workshops and festivals. Therewere textile triumphs and disappointments, but always memorable encounters

There will be a small charge for talks tickets, so we can reward our speakers for their hard work.

Plus: delicious onsite catering and refreshments all day in the Saltford Community Café
